Polly Pocket: A Tiny Toy with a Big History
Polly Pocket, the beloved miniature doll brand, has been captivating children’s imaginations for decades. The concept originated in 1983 when Chris Wiggs created a tiny doll house inside a powder compact for his daughter. Bluebird Toys liked the idea and launched the first Polly Pocket toys in 1989.
The original Polly Pocket featured tiny plastic dolls in clamshell-style cases that opened to reveal detailed miniature worlds. These compact playsets quickly became a hit among children, especially girls, in the early 1990s.
In 1998, Mattel acquired Bluebird Toys and the Polly Pocket brand. They redesigned the dolls, making them slightly larger and more poseable. This new version of Polly Pocket was introduced in 1999.
The brand continued to evolve, introducing various themes, characters, and playsets over the years. In 2018, Mattel relaunched Polly Pocket, returning to its roots with smaller dolls and compact playsets, much to the delight of both new fans and nostalgic adults.
Today, Polly Pocket remains a popular toy line, continuing to inspire imaginative play with its tiny dolls and portable worlds.
